Derby Regional Hospital
Derby is a town of about 4,500 people, half of which are Indigenous Australians representing three different language groups. Derby is located 2 354 km north of Perth and 236 km from Broome.
Derby Regional Hospital is a very well appointed and equipped regional hopsital. It caters for medical, surgical, paediatric and maternity care and has a busy emergency service. It currently caters mainly for Derby and surrounding areas.
Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) runs preventative and public health programs, including maternal and child health, women's health, chronic disease and sexual health. DAHS has a dialysis unit that operates three days a week. Six doctors are currently employed, and the clinics are run by nurses and Aboriginal health workers.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service flies to remote clinics in the area on a regular basis. Derby is the main base for the RFDS in the Kimberley. The base was established in Derby in 1955. Other services include:
