Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the main commercial centre of the Goldfields region, is a vibrant, bustling city located about 600 km east of Perth.

The administrative head office of The Rural Clinical School of Western Australia is in Kalgoorlie. Located in a dedicated building on the site of Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital, it is a modern building that incorporates both administrative and teaching facilities.

Accommodation

  • Three fully furnished, well-appointed houses are available within one kilometre of the hospital and the Office.
  • All houses have wireless ADSL, and students are provided with a laptop computer for use while they are on placement.

Health services

Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital has 131 beds comprising medical, surgical, children's, maternity, special care, restorative care, day surgery, renal dialysis and a mental health unit.

There are 30 private general practitioners in Kalgoorlie including six general practitioners employed by Bega Garnbirringu and three with the RFDS. In addition there are generally two registrars working in Kalgoorlie. Most of the GPs in Kalgoorlie are involved in teaching Rural Clinical School students.

Kalgoorlie has two consultant general surgeons, one obstetrician/gynaecologist, one physician, one local paediatrician, five general specialists, one phrenologist and 34 visiting specialists of various disciplines.

Visiting specialists

  • Arthritis Clinic – one to two days every one to two months
  • Audiologist – one day approximately every week
  • Cardiologist – one day per month
  • Dermatologist – two days every month
  • Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic – once every two to three months
  • Echocardiographer – weekly visits
  • ENT Surgeon – two days every month
  • Geneticist – two days every four months
  • Nephrologist – one day each month
  • Occupational Physician – one day approximately every six weeks
  • Oncologist – one day each month
  • Ophthalmologist – two days each month
  • Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon – one day every quarter
  • Pacemaker Clinic – one day every six months
  • Paediatric Nephrologist – three times per year
  • Paediatric Surgeon/Urologist – one day per quarter
  • Paediatric Cardiology Clinic – twice a year
  • Paediatric Respiratory Clinic – one day every quarter
  • Pain Management Specialist – one day each month
  • Plastic Surgeon – one day every two months
  • Radiation Oncologist – one day each month
  • Radiotherapist – one day each quarter
  • Respiratory Physician – one day every one to two months
  • Urologist – two days per month

Every effort is made to accommodate students' requests to spend time with the visiting specialists. Please note, however, that this may not always be possible because of the time constraints placed upon the specialists when they visit.
