Port Hedland is well known for its Indigenous culture, big ships, long trains, piles of salt, red dust and its fantastic community spirit.
The town is located 1 660 kilometres north of Perth and has a population of 15 000. The RCS office is in Wedge Street, the main street of Port Hedland’s CBD.
Two side-by-side modern three-bedroom/two-bathroom townhouses situated opposite the racecourse provide the accommodation for Port Hedland’s RCS students.
Port Hedland Regional Hospital provides 50 acute beds catering for medical, surgical, paediatric, and obstetrics and gynaecology. There are about 300 deliveries per year.
Attached to the hospital is Yulanya, which offers up to 25 beds. The hospital has eight full-time GPs, two registrars, two interns and seven resident specialists.
There are three GP practices in town. Resident specialists include a general surgeon, radiologist, anaesthetist, two physicians, a paediatrician and an obstetrician/gynaecologist.
Specialists from the following fields visit Port Hedland either on a regular basis or biannually, depending on their field of expertise.
Every effort will be made to accommodate students' requests to spend time with the visiting specialists. Please note, however, that this may not always be possible because of the time constraints placed upon the specialists when they visit.
